‘President has left SL, oh sorry, he’s still here’ – Mahinda Yapa

Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena yesterday (11) told Indian news agency ANI that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is still in Sri Lanka, just hours after telling BBC’s Global News podcast that the President has left the country.

Speaking to BBC, Abeywardena said that the President was in a nearby country and that he would be back on the island on Wednesday (13).

However, Speaker Abeywardena subsequently told ANI over a telephone call: “President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa is still in the country, I made a mistake in the (BBC) interview.”

When asked further about the whereabouts of the Sri Lankan President, the Speaker said that he is still in the country, according to ANI.
