SJB Gampaha District MP Ajith Mannapperuma told Parliament yesterday that the monthly electricity bill of Parliament amounts to Rs. 6 million. He said this while raising a question to Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera regarding renewable energy projects.
The MP said a project to generate electricity through solar power should be started in Parliament as an example for the country and reducing the electricity bill of Parliament at a time when opinions are being expressed in the society regarding the reduction of the electricity bill.
Responding to the question, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said it was necessary to reduce the electricity bill in Parliament.
A proposal has been submitted to install solar panels on another land belonging to Parliament and obtain electricity as installing solar panels on the Parliament roof was not possible.
The installation of solar panels on the roofs of hospitals will be completed this year. Installation of solar panels in schools and provincial council buildings has already started. We cannot provide financial assistance for installing solar panels. But technical support can be provided,”the Minister said.
