Sugar Import Scam Amount can secure Covid19 Vaccine for Entire Sri Lanka: JVP goes to CID

The JVP claimed if Sri Lanka managed to recover the money looted in the sugar import scam, the country would not have any need to secure a loan to procure the COVID-19 vaccine.

JVP Politburo member Wasantha Samarasinghe on Monday (04) filed yet another complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department over the sugar import scam which has cost the state over Rs. 10 Billion.

Labeling the scam as an organized crime, Samarasinghe said the import tax of Rs. 50 on a kilogram of sugar was dropped to 25 cents in October, together with the taxes of other commodities, paving the way for the scam to take place.

He alleged during the said period Sathosa had imposed 750 Metric Tonnes of sugar from a company named Wilmar at Rs. 127 per kilogram and another 700 Metric Tonnes of sugar at Rs. 122 per kilogram.

He called on the authorities to conduct an immediate investigation into the matter.

Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala who accompanied the JVP member called on the authorities to immediately arrest all those responsible for the scam and to file indictments with the courts.
