The Inaugural Session of the 9th Parliament of Socialist Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka was held today. This was the first time the inaugural session of the Parliament took place without Vehicle and Military Parade
Hon. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Parliament proposed by Hon. Dinesh Gunawardana and seconded by Hon. Ranjith Madduma Bandara. Thereafter, all Members of Parliament Took Oaths as MP’s.
Hon. Dinesh Gunawardana was named as the Leader of the House while Hon . Johnston Fernando was appointed as Chief Government Whip. Moreover, Hon. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya was selected as Deputy Speaker and Hon. Angajan Ramanathan was selected as Deputy Chairman of Committees. The Position of Opposition Leader was vested with Hon. Sajith Premadasa by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
In a remarkable incident it was noted that the State Minister for Batik, Handloom and Domestic Apparel Production was seen arriving to the Parliament wearing a Batic Attire while First Time Parliament Entrant Hon. Madura Withanage arrived to the premises by travelling in a Boat. Meanwhile 2 MP’s namely Premalal Jayasekara and Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillaiyan attended the session while being in Prison.
Out of the 225 MP’s 02 National List MP’s from United National Party and Ape Jana Bala Party as their National List Candidate name has still not been conveyed officially. Thus making this the first time a member from UNP not attending a Parliamentary Session.
