Gazette allowing oil with other substances, abolished

The government has decided to abolish the Gazette Notification issued on the 7th of October 2016 allowing oil with other substances to be imported.

Accordingly, Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardana said steps will be taken to issue a new Gazette to ensure other substances cannot be included in imported oil.

The Minister said the 2016 Gazette states that imported oil containing other substances, must be indicated on the label, adding this Gazette led to mixed oil being imported.

Minister Gunawardana said the Food Control Administration Unit of the Ministry of Health and the Sri Lanka Standard Institute remains continuously vigilant, adding that they also determined that the stock of coconut oil containing cancerous substances.

He noted the Director General of the Customs has taken steps to issue directives to reexport the stock.

The Minister said a new Gazette will be issued pertaining to importing oil.
