Cabinet Sub-committee table recommendations
The Cabinet Sub-committee appointed to study recommendations tabled in the final report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed to probe the Easter Sunday attacks, have tabled recommendations on 78 proposals highlighted in the report.
Minister Chamal Rajapaksa said action will be taken against Police officers, who were named under negligence of duty.
The Minister said an inquiry will be launched in to the incident where several Buddhist statues were damaged in Mawanella.
Minister Rajapaksa claimed an investigation will also be launched into how a youth in Wanathawilluwa was arrested for manufacturing explosives, but was later released by decree of the President.
The Minister revealed a probe will also be conducted to uncover the reasons behind a minor ethnic conflict in Kattankudy.
Minister Chamal Rajapaksa claimed a written arrest request was given to the Minister in charge of Police and other officials, by the Soufi Organization but was ignored.
Minister Rajapaksa said he will recommend to uncover sources of funding for the extremists as well.
When questioned by media over amending laws to punish the perpetrators of the Easter Sunday attacks, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said they will ensure justice through the judiciary.
Minister Prasanna Ranatunga revealed certain recommendations were presented to amend the law, which has also been forwarded to the Justice Ministry.
He revealed that a recommendation was also made for new technology to be used in terrorism mitigation, adding that a bill in this regard would be presented by the Ministry of Defence.(NR)
