A verdict of suicide has been returned on the death of the young girl at former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen’s residence after the Judicial Medical Officer confirmed the cause of her death, a senior police officer told the Sunday Observer yesterday.
However, the police at Dayagama, Nuwara Eliya have begun a fresh investigation on the findings of the postmortem where it has been revealed that she had been sexually abused for over a long period. The police have recorded statements from over 10 people including her mother.
The 16-year-old girl worked as a domestic aide at one of the Colombo residences of the former Minister. On admission to the Colombo National Hospital with severe burn injuries, she succumbed to her injuries after receiving treatment for 12 days.
A magisterial inquest and a postmortem examination was carried out on the body on Friday and the body was handed over to her mother.
The girl was a resident of Dayagama and had been a 15-year-old minor when she was brought to the Parliamentarian’s house last October.
Borella Police, Dayagama police and Colombo South Divisional Children and Women’s Bureau are conducting joint investigations. SO
