Planned housing, urban development targets achieved in 2021 – PM

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the planned targets in the areas of housing and urban development have been achieved in 2021.

This was stated by the Prime Minister at the presentation of the work plan of the Ministry for the year 2022 on Wednesday at the Suhurupaya Ministry Auditorium, Battaramulla.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the Government is ready to face the challenges that would confront the housing and urban development sectors in 2022 as well.

There are four State Ministries functioning under the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing. These include the State Ministry of Urban Development Waste Disposal and Community Cleansing, the State Ministry of Estate Housing and Community Infrastructure, the State Ministry of Rural Housing and Building Materials and the State Ministry of Coast Conservation and Low Land Development.

Secretary to the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing Sirinimal Perera presented the progress shown by the Ministry in the year 2021 and the work plan for the year 2022. The Secretaries of State Ministries then presented the proposed action plan for the year 2022 to the Prime Minister.

Keerthi Abeywardena, Secretary to the State Ministry of Rural Housing and Building Materials Industries, said that out of the 20,000 houses constructed under the Rural Housing Scheme on the instructions of the Prime Minister, 15,000 low income earners have already been resettled.

He also said that the raw materials required for the construction sector have been made available to customers at reasonable prices through 18 operating branches across the country.

Secretary to the Ministry as well as Secretary to the State Ministry of Urban Development Waste Disposal and Public Sanitation Sirinimal Perera stated that 70 percent of the work on the 100 city project has already been completed and the plan to develop another 118 cities under the new budget proposal is being implemented.

Secretary to the Ministry of Estate Housing and Community Infrastructure DPG Kumarasiri said that the 10,000 Estate Housing Program as well as the programme to provide 900 new houses under the Indo-Lanka Friendship Program are currently being implemented successfully.
